The Semester Fee
How do I pay the semester fee, what is it used for, and can I pay outside Norway?
All students must be members of the Student Welfare Organisation (SiB). SiB is a non-profit organisation and the semester fee finances SiB's welfare services for students. You automatically become a member of SiB when you pay the semester fee through the University of Bergen.
Students on exchange programmes do not have to pay the semester fee. However, these students are still entitled to the same services from SiB through their exchange programme as all other registered students.
About the semester fee
The public institutions of higher education in Norway do not charge tuition fees. Still, students must pay a semester fee to the Student Welfare Organisation. As a member of SiB, students are entitled to a range of welfare services. The semester fee is NOK 590,- (as of autumn 2014). It helps finance the welfare services that SiB offer. In addition, a part of the semester fee (NOK 40,-) is donated to the Norwegian Students' and Academics' International Assistance Fund (SAIH). If you do not wish to donate to SAIH, you can subtract NOK 40,- from the invoice amount and pay NOK 550,- (as of autumn 2014). If you wish to donate more, please visit SAIH on the web for more information.
