Sjøvaag’s postdoctoral research project "The Impact of Structural Shifts on the News" asks how structural changes in the media landscape affect media ownership, and again how ownership influences content. The project looks at the Norwegian newspaper market, specifically investigating the strategies of Schibsted. The project belongs under the NRC-funded Journalistic Reorientations project.
Sjøvaag is affiliated with the research project Responding to Welfare State Services: An Analysis of Users, Media and Public Services, funded by the Research Council's VAM programme, and led by Dag Arne Christensen at Rokkan Centre.
Sjøvaag is member of an ongoing project investigating the online news strategy of the public service braodcaster NRK, Measuring Online News Content.
Sjøvaag has also received funding from Fellesløftet for a project entitled Diversity in the Norwegian News Media Landscape: A Hybrid Method for Evaluating Media Policy. The aim of the project is to evaluate the effect of media policy and regulation on the diversity of the Norwegian news landscape. Regulations subject to evaluation include ownership restrictions, direct press support and protection of public service broadcasting. Norwegian media legislation assumes media diversity to support freedom of speech. As such, this project will collect large quantities of data from national, regional and local news outlets and analyse pluralism of journalistic output in print, online, mobile and broadcast media. The data will comprise in excess of 30 newspapers published across the country, and will include radio and television broadcasting. The project will result in analyses of diversity levels in the Norwegian news market across ownership structures, publication platforms and regions and involves content, agenda setting mechanisms and sources and voices present in the news. The scale of data required for this analysis requires new methods for processing media content that will be developed in the intersection between media studies and information science.
The project will launch towards the end of 2014.
