The aim of the group is to promote research in ancient philosophy.

The ancient philosophy group wishes to be joined by master's students, PhD candidates, teaching assistants and members of the academic staff who intend to work on the period from Thales to Augustine. The group as such has no special preferences concerning philosophical approaches.

The current research project of the group is Poetry & Philosophy. The project investigates the complex relationship between poetical elements and philosophical argumentation in Plato's dialogues. In this project, the research group collaborates with philosophers at universities in the US, Italy, Denmark, and other universities in Norway.

The project arranges yearly international symposia, each year with the focus on one of Plato's dialogues. The title of this year's symposium is "Poetry and Philosopsphy in the Light of Plato's Protagoras. It will be held in Bergen, 4 - 6 June. Keynote speaker will be Marina McCoy, Professor of Philosophy at Boston College. Program

The group is headed by Professor Vigdis Songe-Møller.
