Silverlight and JavaFX
RIA (Rich Internet Application) are web applications that have the features and functionality of traditional desktop applications. (At JavaOne) Sun revealed JavaFX (used to be F3) a new Java technology for desktop, mobile, web, and TVs, and its latest push into RIA world. The most interesting application from the JavaFX family in this context is maybe JavaFX Script, a new scripting language that gives Java developers the power to quickly create content-rich applications for the widest variety of clients (see announcement).
From Microsoft we got Silverlight (more), a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of Microsoft .NET–based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. Silverlight 1.1 supports CLR (see Dynamic Code in Silverlight). Jesse Liberty discuss Silverlight in more details, and Ted Leung talks about CLR (and Linq) embedded in Silverlight.
I've no experience with JavaFX, but I've installed Silverlight on my Mac and tried some demos in Safari. Works, but currently no development support on the Mac. [via, via]
Update: I planned to, but forgot to mention Adobe's approach, Adobe Flex.
