Modules

The international semester at Nesna University College is divided into four different modules of 7.5 credit points. The semester gives 30 ECTS credits, which corresponds to a full time semester course. All modules are taught in English.

Module 1: Multicultural Understanding
The aim is to develop awareness and reflections of one's own values, attitudes and world view, and how we construct these concepts. How can they be transformed? How do we construct identity in multicultural societies, and how do we deal with the challenges of a world in transition? We have to become conscious of the economical, social, political, and historical causes and effects of migration, as well as develop knowledge about global questions and an awareness of power relations, prejudice, and racism.

Module 2: Drama
The drama module presents some major drama and theatre methods, and gives the students an experience in participating in and leading drama and theatre activities. The students explore differences and similarities between performing practices from varying geographical areas in the world. Special attention is given to community theatre as a genre with its own methodology and strategies.

Module 3: Music
This module gives an introduction to traditional and popular music from different cultures. The performance of music in groups with focus on different instrument techniques and ensemble leadership is emphasized. An introduction to world music forms the basis to create new musical settings, and stresses the value of participation and musical interaction with others from different cultures. The module qualifies students in leading and organizing multicultural musical activities bridging traditional categories and boundaries.

Module 4: Dance
This module gives an introduction to both traditional and popular dance forms from different cultures. The dance classes are to some extent taught together with music classes. The students shall increase their understanding of dance as a creative process and dance as an important activity in social performance.

Project Work: Intercultural Performance

The intercultural performance is a practical semester project involving all subjects with an interdisciplinary focus. One of the goals for the semester is to finalize a production with an intercultural theme by using music, dance, and drama. The production will be performed both in Nesna and at the Stamsund International Theatre Festival in May/June.

Optional Module: Teaching Practice
For students who wish to have teaching practice as a part of their international semester. This module consists of a practice period in a Norwegian primary or secondary school or a municipality cultural school which offers courses in dance, drama, and/or music. During teaching practice, students shall plan, initiate, lead, and evaluate own teaching projects with an interdisciplinary aesthetic focus.
