System Requirements
ESS EduNet works in a normal web browser. This means that it is possible to have several browser windows open at the same time, and they can be moved, enlarged or diminished.
Web browsers
ESS EduNet requires one of the following web browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
- Netscape 6.0 or higher
- Mozilla 1.0 or higher
Java-enabled web browser
To view a thematic map you need a web browser that is java-enabled. Most web browsers need a plug-in. If your browser is not java enabled, you will be asked whether you want to install the plug-in when you try to open a page with a thematic map. Please note that some environments require a system administrator's access to install plug-ins. You can download the Java plugin from this site.
Additional software
Some of the exercises can not be solved online. Instructions are given with reference to SPSS, but any statistical software could be used. For those with no statistical software available, it is possible to download a run-time version of the statistical programme NSDstat with the data included. This programme can only be used to analyse the included data. Please note that some environments require a system administrator's access to install additional software. Run-time NSDstat could be downloaded from this site.
Bandwidth
ESS EduNet should work satisfactorily on lines with a minimum connection speed of 56,6 Kbps (i.e. standard modem capacity for dial-up connections).
In order to view a map for the first time, a java applet needs to be loaded. This may take up to a minute with a dial-up connection, but this only happens the first time you open a map in ESS EduNet.
Font size
Text on ESS EduNet (except pictures and maps) may be scaled according to your wishes. The method varies between web browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer allows 5 steps of scaling. If your mouse has a wheel, you may simply change the scales by holding the "ctrl" key on your keyboard and rolling the wheel. Using an ordinary mouse, select "font size" from the "show" menu and choose your preferred text size. - Netscape/Mozilla
Both Netscape 6+ and Mozilla will let you scale documents up and down as you like. Select "Show" from the menu, select "font size" and your preferred text size. If you use this function a lot, you may add the scaling function to a wheeled mouse using the dialog under "Edit" - "Preferences" - "Advanced" - "Mouse wheel".
