A ST6540 rach consists of two controllers and 12 disk shelfs. Each shelf has 16 disks.

The ST6540 has 4 loops, each loop will have 3 disk shelfs. The shelfs will have names indication which loop it belongs to:

  • "11" indicates loop 1 shelf 1 (1:1 on the illustration to the right)
  • "12" indicates loop 1 shelf 2 (1:2 on the illustration to the right)
  • "43" indicates loop 4 shelf 3 (4:3 on the illustration to the right)

Both Oslo and Trondheim will have this/similar setups, to be agreed Fri May 16th.

LUNs

When we want to create RAID5 4+1 sets, we do want to have one disk from each loop in the raid set. Each RAID5 set will have two disks from one of the loops. We round robin the extra disk on the loops: Raid set 1 will have two disks from loop 1, raid set 2 will have two disks from loop 2, ...., raid 5 will have two disks from loop one.

The 192 disks will be distributed on 38 raid5 sets. This will leave 2 disks as hot spares (the drawing shows 3 hot spares, which indicates glitch leading to that one of the raid sets have 4 disks in it and not 5).

Physical cabeling

Cables from the switches to the controllers are labeled. All other cables are free from labeling, but short easily traceable cables has been used.

Oslo is so dissatisfied with the vendors treatment of the delivered cables that they will replace many cables.

Oslo performed re-cabling, re-labeling, shuffling of shelfs and re-distribution of power cables Fri May 16th and Sun May 18th. Disk shuffling and renaming of shelves will be done Monday May 20th.

Trondheim will employ SUN to do the re-labeling and renaming of shelfs.

Servers

Each site has 6 HP servers connected to the FC storage switches (a closer description will be added).
