NorStore - a short intro

NorStore is a project in parallel to NorGrid and Notur organized under UNINETT Sigma. The objective of NorStore is to provide the Norwegian research community with a storage infrastructure.

Contents

Network

Two NorStore file servers in Oslo will have 10Gbit NIC for redundant 10Gbit communication with Trondheim and Bergen by way of the UNINETT 10Gbit link. Initially, this link will be routed to the tung-gw.

Description of the NorStore 10Gbit network.

Contract with SUN

  • The contract with sun has been signed
  • Lars Skogan has sent revised SUN amendments to the contract to the norstore-eval@usninett.no mailing list and awaits response from Kjell Gunnar
  • A draft contract has been received by Kjell Gunnar, we have red through it and we have added comments and composed a response to Skogan
  • Kjell Gunnar has been given the responsibility to finalize the contract with SUN
  • Meetings with SUN will be held Jan 11 at 12pm
  • Updated version of the contract is delivered to Oslo, Trondheim and Bergen

Pending tasks

USIT has made a choice to support the national storage facility, NorStore, and to fulfill this role, there are some pending tasks.

Delivery

Servers

4 HP DL385 and two HP DL380 delivered April 25th.

Disk system

  • Norstore shipping: 24.03.08
  • Delivery: 27.03.08

Testing

We divide the testing into WAN, HW, middle ware (GPFS) and services. We should probably include testing of routine tasks too.

Description of pre production testing is moved to a separate page.

NorStore operations

NorStore will be a nathional resource. The operations of NorStore resourses should be done in a collaborative way. The handeling of NorStore grants will be handeled by the Norwegian Research Counsil RFK with input from the centra leaders.

Operations

The NorStore resource will need operations for the coming 3 years (or more) and the resource will most probably be expanded every year. This calls for stable and well tended maintenance routines. At USIT, BSD with storage-core is able to provide this and thus they have been part of the NorStore acquiring process from early on.

  • NorStore want to have disk and system operations from BSD/storage-core
  • It has been proposed that USIT server operation regime is used to run NorStore servers/IO-hosts on involved sites (arrangements, pro/cons/compensations must be worked out)
  • 6 HP DL385 servers are proposed and ordered
  • Mail to Jacko about this is required before proceeding mail sent
  • Jacko has ACKed, and Jostein is placing the order for servers early week 51
  • Both NTNU, UiB and UiO will buy HP DL38x type servers
  • NorStore will have two positions on each site
  • One position is financed by NorStore, the other position is financed by UiO (process is not finished yet)
  • One position will be placed in BSD/storage core, the other position in VD; both persons will work closely in the upcoming NorStore projects

Operations SLA with BSD. Kjetil: Hva vil du ha inn her?
