The 2007 NorStore purchase
December 2007 Oslo and Trondheim are acquiring national storage devices in cooperation with UNINETT Sigma. The result of this process was that each of the sites bought 600TB disk based storage from SUN. NorStore1 use GPFS and file servers to enable NorStore services. For more information, see the NorStore1 purchase document.
The 2007/2008 configuration
Projects that receives support from The Norwegian Board of Technology may apply for NorStore resources. For 2007/2008 two resources have been purchased, a 600TB facility at NTNU and a 600TB facility at UiO. In 2008 the NorStore resources will be configured as two separate resources. This document has focus on the UiO part of the NorStore resource.
Specification of the UiO NorStore resource
Oslo and Trondheim each have a 600TB NorStore storage resource. This consists of:
Storage
- Four SUN ST 6540 racks
- Each 6540 rack consist of
- 192 1 TB 7200RPM SATA II disks
- 2 FC controllers
- 4 x 16A power supply
- Div

- 2 x 32 port FC4 switches
- Fiber cables
Extras
UiO has purchased 5 extra disk shelves, a controller and a rack to support NOTUR work dirs, NOTUR home dirs, Astro-project storage and Climate project storage. These shelves consist of 15KRPM and will be used to boost the performance of these types of storage. The layout of the Oslo disk system is described here.
Bergen has acquired a one rack 6540 to be part of NorStore.
Servers
- NorStore has 3 types of servers

- File servers: 4 - HP DL 385 with 2 x FC-cards, 4GB memory
- Application servers: 2 - HP DL 385, 16GB memory
- Login servers: 0 - same as file servers?
- 10Gb cards:
- 2 x 10Gb Ethernet cards are ordered
- Two 10Bb cards are needed to offer redundancy in the mirroring of data between Oslo and Trondheim
- The process of designing redundant 10Gb from NorStore servers internally in the machine room is started

Power requirements
The power requirements of each SUN ST 6540 is 2x16A@220V. Actual power consumption measured by SUN at Nationalbiblioteket, which have the same type equipment, is 3KW per 6540, resulting in a total of 15KW/h redundant power.
Location in the machine room
The equipment will require 6 racks, 5 racks for the disks and one for file servers and application servers. The disk racks will be located at M28,12; M29,12; M30,12; M31,12; M32,12 while file servers will be located at M31,14.
The power consumption of the UiO NorStore disk systems is less than 15 KW/h, configured as 10x16A@220V redundant power and 10x16A@220V net power, the weight of each rack is close to 1000KG with full shelves. The server rack needs 2x16A@220V redundant power and 2x16A@220V net power.
