Guide for installing VPN - Linux using Cisco VPN client (4.6)
There is an alternative VPN client available for Linux users. Read more about it here.
Download the Cisco VPN client here (user: vpn, password: klient): vpn client. You can also download the file via wget:
wget --http-user=vpn --http-passwd=klient http://www.ntnu.no/oppringt/vpn/klient/linux/vpnclient-linux-4.8.00.0490-k9.tar.gz
To decompress the file, use the command:
tar -xzf vpnclient-linux-4.8.00.0490-k9.tar.gz
Go to the vpn catalogue, and enter the command:
./vpn_install
Choose no when asked Automatically start the VPN service at boot time [yes] if you want to start your vpn client manually. For the rest of the options, the default value should work.
The client is installed, and configuration files have to be made. These are placed in /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles. Go there and make a new file called ntnu.pcf. The contents of this file should be as shown below (Enter your user name after the line Username=):
[main] Description=sample user profile Host=vpn.ntnu.no AuthType=1 GroupName=alle GroupPwd=passord Username= EnableLocalLAN=1 EnableISPConnect=0 ISPConnectType=0 ISPConnect= ISPCommand= SaveUserPassword=0 EnableBackup=0 BackupServer= EnableNat=1 TunnelingMode=1 CertStore=0 CertName= CertPath= CertSubjectName= CertSerialHash=00000000000000000000000000000000 DHGroup=2 ForceKeepAlives=1
Now the vpn client is ready to use IPSEC over TCP. The client should handle being behind a NAT router. If you want to use UDP, choose TunnelingMode=0. To block access to the local network when vpn is being used, choose EnableLocalLAN=0.
Connecting
To open the vpn connection, write:
/usr/local/bin/vpnclient connect ntnu
