How to make use of a wireless network using Windows XP
In order to use NTNU's wireless network you need to install a wireless network card.
To ensure that your card will work, you need to get a card that's been WiFi-approved. You can find more information about WiFi and a list of approved cards at WiFi. The card supports the 11 Mbps standard IEEE 802.11.
Install the wireless network card.
Most card will automatically be detected by Windows as you place the card in the correct slot in your computer. Windows will then ask you if you wish to install the card.
Follow the installation guide that came with your network card. When using Windows XP you should use built-in drivers. External drivers have been known to sometimes work poorly.
Configure your wireless network connection:
When the card has been properly installed, a message will appear on your screen:
New Network device installed and you'll be adviced that you have a new Wireless Network
Connection.
To configure this connection:
- Click on the Start button, choose Control Panel, then Network Connections.
- Rightclick on Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.
Now you will see a picture like this:
- On the General tab, first select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click on the Properties button.
- Make sure that both Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically is checked. Click OK.
- Go to the Wireless Networks tab and click Add....
- The network name must be ntnu in small letters and all encryption must be turned off.
- Click OK twice.
To distinguish between your Network Connections you may like to Rename
the connection. E.g. to NTNU Wireless Network Connection.
Now you can connect to NTNU's wireless network. To access web pages on the Internet
you need to install a VPN-client
.
