Install Windows XP/2000
Introduction
Because of the increasing virus threat, ITEA has started to scan the NTNU network for computers vulnerable to virus attacks. If a vunerable computer is found, its network connection is blocked in order to avoid further spreading of possible viruses. This prevents the vulnerable computer from connecting to both internet and the NTNU network.
To avoid this from happening, you must remember to keep your Windows installation updated with the newest security patches. How to do this is described in this article.
Even if you are careful and install all the security patches as soon as they are released, you will bump into some problems when reinstalling Windows. Halfway through the installation, your computer will connect to the network, and try to stay connected until the installation is completed. Then the ITEA scan will detect your newly installed, unpatched Windows installation, and block the network connection. Thus, when the installation is completed and you want to update your operating system, your internet connection will be blocked.
The following is a guide that shows you how to avoid this problem when installing Windows XP/2003
Windows XP
- Ready your computer for installation, and unplug the network cable.
- Install Windows as usual.
- Start the Windows XP firewall. You can find an article describing how to do this here: Windows XP firewall .
- Reconnect the network cable
- Open Internet Explorer, choose Help->Windows Update. Download and install all critical updates.
Windows 2000
- Ready your computer for installation, and unplug the network cable.
- Install Windows as usual.
- Since there is no built-in firewall in Windows 2000, you'll have to install one for yourself. You can get a CD with Kerio Personal Firewall from Orakeltjenesten, or you can download it from Progdist.
- When the firewall is up-and-running, reconnect the network cable
- Open Internet Explorer, choose Help->Windows Update. Download and install all critical updates.
After patching
After the patching of your Windows installation, all known vulnerabilities will be fixed. It is important to install security patches regularly. Also, remember that an updated anti virus program alone is not enough. For your computer to be completely safe, both patches and anti virus programs must be up-to-date.
