History
Background
InterMedia was etablished in 1998 as an initiative at the University of Oslo for investigating challenges and possibilities in the emerging field of ICT, media and learning environments.
In the beginning
Primarily focused on conducting research, InterMedia was curiously enough established with a staff primarily consisting of technical personell. This staff orginated from three units at the University of Oslo involved in audiovisual production. Gradually the scientific staff increased and now incorporate a core group of senior staff and a group of phD students an postdoctorates. InterMedia now has a small, but multi-skilled staff of researchers, media developers, audiovisual producers, programmers and administrative support.
InterMedia moved to Forskningsparken (Oslo Innovation Centre) in 2000. The new facilities was specially designed to promote research, development and audiovisual productions. The location was also part of a strategy for creating better conditions for collaboration between related interdiciplinary departments in the field of ICT, communication and learning.
Afterwards and now
InterMedia was evaluated in 2002 after having existed for five years. The University of Oslo concluded on the continuation of InterMedia.
Some highlights from our recent history:
- An Evaluation board has been created to perform an annual screening of the activities at InterMedia with the purpose of making informed decisions on future development of InterMedia.
- Reorganizing InterMedia in three focus areas: RESEARCH - LAB - MEDIATION
- Establishing strategic research activities:
- Flexible Learning at the University of Oslo. Involvement in the process of establishing and carrying through a strategic five year plan with accompanied funding for projects.
- EU activities: engagement in both Network of Excellence and projects.
- Formation of four thematic research clusters within InterMedia.
