Programmes and Strategic Initiatives

These strategic initiatives work across the 6 primary research communities.

Green Innovation
Green Innovation is a scientific activity aimed to map and comprehend the barriers, forces and available means for a transition establishing a basis for added value within the energy, petroleum-, and environmental markets. For more about Green Innovation contact Harald Gether.

CO2-Capture and Storage (CCS)
NTNU and SINTEF researchers at the Gas Technology Center are looking at everything from harnessing chemicals or chemical processes that can capture CO2 from fossil fuel power plant emissions to developing the technologies needed to redesign gas-fired power plants to prevent CO2 from being released in flue gases in the first place. The Gas Technology Center is Scandinavia's largest independent research institution. [More about CO2 Capture and Storage ]

Transition to Sustainable Energy Services
The program, "Alternatives for the Transition to Sustainable Energy Services in Northern Europe" (TRANSES), is designed to serve as a venue among key stakeholders based on modeling/ simulation and evaluation of alternative strategies and evolution paths for the energy infrastructures of Northern Europe. More about TRANSES . . .

Hydrogen Technology
The following areas are currently covered: (1)Production of hydrogen from natural gas and methanol by syngas technology including steam reforming and catalytic partial oxidation and microstructured reactors. The research activities range from large (industrial) to small (portable) scale hydrogen production; (2) Production of hydrogen by electrolysis of water (3) PEM and SOFC fuel cells, including membrane technology, dynamics and systems engineering. NanoLab and Energy Research
The research activities at NTNU span from theoretical to experimental, from fundamental to applied research. NTNU NanoLab will focus on four prioritized research areas: nanoelectronics, nanophotonics and nanomagnetism, nanostructured materials, bionanotechnology and nanotechnology for energy and the environment.
