I hold a cand.polit. degree from NTNU (1999) and Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles (2004). My dissertation focuses on the role of the state in fostering technological progress, industrial leadership and long-term economic growth and development since the Industrial Revolution. A revised version of this manuscript will published as a monograph in January 2007 on Ashgate under the title "Governance, Growth and Global Leadership".

For my Post doc, I am using the general framework from my dissertation to apply the lessons derived about the role of the state and vested interests in policymaking to the area of environmental policymaking. I am currently working on how institutional and political constraints prevent environmentally sound policies, and how these constraints vary between countries.
