I am Associate Professor in Energy and Environmental Systems Analysis at the Department for Energy and Process Engineering. I am also affiliated with the Industrial Ecology Program and I am the manager of the Life Cycle Assessment Laboratory .

Teaching: I currently teach two graduate level courses within the energy and environmental systems analysis and industrial ecology field:

TEP 4223 Life Cycle Assessment and Eco- Efficiency gives a thorough introduction to the essentials of Life Cycle Assessment. This involves everything from the basic math to hybrid life cycle assessment methods and application of multi objective optimization techniques.

TEP 4222 Input-Output Analysis, Trade and Environment provides a thorough understanding of the utility provided by input -output analysis to understand the environmental aspects of consumption, production and trade activities.

Research: The objective of my research is twofold. First and foremost I aim to contribute to understanding the environmental repercussions of our production, and thereby indirectly, our consumption activities. Secondly, I aim to apply this systems understanding to interface with design of technologies and economic aspects of choice of technologies. This in order to identify feasible and sustainable production and consumption pathways.

The main focus of my research is the application and further development of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. I have especially worked on the combination of Input-Output analysis with traditional LCA in what is known as hybrid Life Cycle Assessment. The LCA framework provides a good basis for understanding environmental repercussions in specific production systems. I am also involved in research using input-output analysis to understand environmental repercussion of consumptions and production activities on a global scale. Form this systems understanding I find motivation for other research into the design of specific technologies. Also I am involved in research into eco-industrial parks.

Awards: Outstanding Student Poster Award, LCA of Hydrogen Production from a Steam Methane Reforming Plant with CO 2 Sequestration and Deposition, The Science and Culture of Industrial Ecology Conference, Leiden November 2001
