Integration Across Disciplines

Integrated Operations

Key components: Methods, tools, solutions and knowledge to improve work processes, decision-making processes and for managing organizational changes across the value chain. Improving HSE by targeting research within areas identified as safety and environmental challenges of IO. Raised competence of current and future IO actors by providing courses, seminars and university programs.

4.1

Crystall Ball

Objectives/deliverables

  • Investigate and demonstrate what petroleum IO can learn from gaming, and particularly what can be learned from how “digital natives” utilise advanced ICT tools.
  • Investigate what can be learned from other industries, with relation to remote operation, collaboration, communication and cooperation in distributed teams.

Application of results
Collaboration, cooperation and communication utilising modern ICT solutions.

Potential effect for improved field operation
Will potentially have impact in all areas.

Deliverables 2007
These results and reports will available on the Crystal Ball sub-project page (4.1) , when completed.

  1. State-of-the-art report in gaming theory and research
  2. Adapted principle simulator and games to an IO context
  3. Results of a gaming skill pilot
  4. Lessons learned report from other industries

4.2

New work processes and enabling technologies

Objectives/deliverables

4.2. (a) Decision-making and change management in distributed teams -

  • To identify the main challenges encountered 1) in decision-making processes in distributed IO teams and 2) in change management when implementing new forms of distributed teamwork in IO,
  • To identify effective strategies for handling the challenges
  • To identify new decision-making processes enabled by new technologies
  • To test and evaluate these strategies and processes

Has applications for decision-making processes within drilling & well construction, reservoir management & production optimization, operations & maintenance. The potential effect for improved field operation will be to contribute to all of the above Center goals.

4.2. (b) Data integration

  • Confederated outlook on data integration challenges relevant for IO.
  • Exploration of selected methods/software applied to selected cases and deployments within the IO center infrastructure

If deemed opportune, results will be applied within other IO center projects/cases, and by members in actual operations. The potential effect for improved operation includes: Fewer data integration predicaments will lead to better planning and more efficient plan execution which again will lead to increased safety, less downtime and increased production.

4.2. (c) Visualisation for improved decision-making

  • Develop and evaluate new visualisation solutions with proven benefits for IO.
  • 2 PhD’s: “Information presentations as a means for supporting Common Ground in Integrated Operations”

Visualisation solutions will benefit drilling, production optimisation and operation and maintenance. The potential effect for improved field operation includes: Improved efficiency in decisions; Improved HSE; Creating a shared situation understanding.

4.2. (d) Interactive 4D Collaboration Frameworks

  • Develop and study use of advanced interactive 4D frameworks (temporal VR) for decision support, decision implementation, collaboration and documentation.
  • Seek not primarily to replace, but to interface with and bridge existing technology
  • Tools shall reflect experiences gained during CORD MTO analyses

Applications include: (first) Maintenance and operations with special focus on SJA and risk assessment; (future) Extension of framework and result into other application areas. The potential effect for improved field operation is improved communication, planning and implementation, leading to better economy and improved safety.

Deliverables 2007:
When possible, these results will available on the sub-project page (4.2) , upon completion.

(a) Decision-making and change management in distributed teams

  • Recommendations for improved performance in decision-making processes in distributed IO teams (to companies where research is conducted)
  • Report with models and methods for improved decision-making & industry seminar

(b) Data integration

  • Strategy and work plan
  • Further activity and funding plan, based on strategy

(c) Visualisation for improved decision-making

  • Report summing up literature and industry surveys
  • Documentation of workshops performed in IO-center
  • Proposed pilot application plan

(d) Interactive 4D Collaboration Frameworks

  • Demonstration of an SJA at a specified case.
  • Specification, design and data gathering of demonstrator
  • Evaluation report of case studies

4.3

Safety and Security in Distributed Working Environment

Objectives/deliverables (4.3)

  • Improve organisations’ ability to effectively handle unwanted IO related incidents, e.g. through establishing joint situation awareness, and identify key coordination efforts.
  • Improve methods, processes and tools for ensuring a proactive focus on safety and security in IO.
  • PhD: “Interaction and safety/security in co-located and distributed teams”
  • PhD: “Robust IO organisations from an ICT perspective”

Application of results

  • IO in a network of organisations, focusing on Drilling & well construction, Reservoir management and production optimisation, and Operation and maintenance
  • Change Management
  • Emergency management
  • IO event reporting and analysis

Potential effect for improved field operation

  • Improved HSE
  • Increased operational resilience
