Top world opportunities

Our Executive MBA program aims to strengthen Russia and Norway’s alliance in the energy sector and help create robust business partnerships between the two nations.

With pragmatic, up-to-date courses, the program will ensure energy managers a far better understanding of the complexities of one of the world’s most dynamic industries.

Energy being more and more a global industry, the program adopts an international approach, building on a collaboration between Russia and Norway through two of their leading technical institutions: MGIMO University in Moscow and the Bodø Graduate School of Business in Bodø, Norway. In recent years, the field of energy management has become dauntingly complex.  It must now deal with different energy sources (hydrocarbons, wind, hydropower, tides, etc.), energy carriers (gas, electricity, heat, hydrogen, etc.), and even different transport solutions, all of which interrelate and form multiple options for business development.  Our program addresses these many options and provides deep insight into the oil-and-gas sector in both Norway and Russia.

What makes us unique?

  • A global perspective, with special attention to the Barents region.
  • First-hand exposure to government, business, and academic institutions in both Norway and Russia.
  • An innovative, integrated curriculum offering a comprehensive look at the driving forces in the energy business, economics, technology, environment, and politics.
  • A unique modular structure that lets students study even while continuing to work in demanding jobs.
  • Opportunities to build networks across the borders and to achieve global leadership competence.

Until now, the energy sector has lacked a career path that exposed professionals to a comprehensive view of the energy industry.

Our program is designed to match this gap.  The five sessions provide an exceptionally well-rounded view of the entire industry.

Flexibility is maximized through a dynamic format that blends the best aspects of traditional classroom teaching with study trips, seminars, and case studies. The program is organized in modules, offered in both Russia and Norway.  Their chief goals are (1) to expose students to a wide range of energy issues and information, and (2) to enable them to build fruitful networks within the industry and the institutions of both countries.

Energy issues are explored through three main dimensions:

LEARNING METHODS

Meeting sessions (modules).  Participants meet five times during the master program, with each session, or “module,” lasting six days. The particular energy topic addressed during a given module is explored not only through lectures by academics and guest experts but also by visits to relevant enterprises and industrial sites. Sufficient time is provided during these sessions for participants to ask questions related not only to any particular theory being covered but also to their own thesis.

Self-study. The participants get to study, on their own, useful reports and articles that are distributed to them in advance of each module, leaving them better prepared to make optimal use of the learning opportunities it affords.

Master thesis. Each participant is expected to stake out some intriguing problem or topic that he or she will explore throughout the master period and ultimately write a thesis on. The thesis must formulate a well-defined problem and then analyze it using scientific methods.

MODULES

This module focuses on strategy and innovation management, management control, and financial management.  It addresses marketing, logistics, and organization as well as ethical and environmental issues.

The second module covers specific features of Russian and world energy markets. Special attention is paid to issues involving energy diplomacy and energy security. Also addressed are investment and financial activity of international oil-and-gas and energy enterprises.

This module highlits how to effectively manage technology development and projects.  Participants will be introduced to key projects in the Barents region and the economic and policy trends of importance.  Environmental challenges in the fuel and energy complex are explored with applications to the Barents region.

The fourth module offers an overview on the Norwegian policy and regulations on safety, security, and the environment. The topics will address the energy scenarios that form the basis for national planning with respect to investments, infrastructure, the need for environmental protection, emission standards, etc. The Norwegian oil history will be presented, and a visit to an oil platform is included as an option for interested participants.

This module will cover key challenges for energy enterprises with respect to the organization, management, and economy; transportation systems; corporate management; competitive strategies; international commercial operations; and contracts and marketing.

Good business thrives on relationships and team-building. That’s why we create a collegial environment that emphasizes teamwork, diversity, and dynamic learning. In this program, students work together, learning to make the best use of each other’s diverse experience, talents, and backgrounds.  Coming from different countries helps them gain insight into comparative energy operations and enables them to exchange experiences by function and area. In today’s network economy, who you know or can reach out to is often just as important as what you know.  As part of a network uniting professionals from different companies worldwide, you will benefit not only from industry-relevant courses but from your new acquaintances, too!  Because the modules incorporate group activities and social events, they create an atmosphere of close cooperation and teamwork, all of which builds friendship and networks.

Six reasons why you should attend:

  • Enhance your knowledge of the energy-management field.
  • Gain exposure to current and emerging aspects of energy management.
  • Get new insights and frameworks for business development.
  • Build a strong network of friends and business associates.
  • Acquire international experience.
  • Add a milestone to your professional career.

Target group

The target group consists of persons with curiosity within the energy sector. They have managerial ambitions, but not necessarily in the administrative direction. The idea is to give the students a formal basis to manage enterprises, units, and projects in a complex business with changing and uncertain frame conditions. The target group may include engineers or people with a natural science background who would like to strengthen their competence in business-related subjects. It also may include lawyers who consider energy-related topics valuable for their job situation. And it may include economists who need to strengthen their competence base with political insight, a technology overview, and environmental management capabilities.

Candidates should have at least two years’ work experience, proven academic reliability, a bachelor degree or better, and, preferably, an international orientation illustrated by competence in foreign languages.  Candidates are evaluated by their achievements and their potential, but also by how well their career aspirations match up with what our MBA Program has to offer.
