New Digital Culture Network in Research and Education.
The purpose of the network is research on problems of method and implications of new media with respect to digital culture; to develop theoretical methods, and critical thinking in the realm of ICT, and teaching (e.g. via European Masters and Doctorates), which serve as a guide for professionals in particular and society at large. A core consortium has been identified. Research is needed on how to develop this into a full-scale network that will cover all relevant institutions in Europe. Digital Culture is a new field. It is most obviously concerned with digital versions of cultural heritage: ranging from the fine arts (paintings, sculpture), performance arts (music, theatre, dance), broadcast media (film, television) to the built environment (architecture) and even the physical environment (in the form of cultural landscapes). Digital Culture includes new media, which are born digital, such as reconstructions in virtual and augmented reality, internet art and new interactive narratives. It also includes digital versions of memory institutions (libraries, museums and archives). The network includes 29 organisations, networks and institutions. Coorperation agreements has been made with networks and organisation in Canada, Japan, China, USA, and Australia. Participants from the Nordic Countries include: Media Lab - University of art and design Helsinki (Finland), The Explorer Studio - The Interactive Institute and Informatics - Lunds University (Sweden), InterMedia, University of Bergen and InterMedia, University of Oslo (Norway), CAVI, Århus University and The Conservator School, The Royal Danish Art Academy.
