KVINNFORSK Lunch

KVINNFORSK invites all to open lunch meetings at Øvre Lysthus/Upper Pavillion, 2. Etg.

- Bring your lunch packet - coffee and tea’s on us! -

Note: See program attached.

We further welcome you to propose other presenters and subjects for additional lunch meetings. Please contact us!

KVINNFORSK believes there is a demand for open meeting places where women, men, gender researchers and others interested in gender issues at the University of Tromsø get an opportunity to discuss subjects of current interest. We are hoping that our lunches may become a “de-briefing”-forum (often used in the UN and other places), an informal forum where researchers and others returning to Tromsø from fieldwork, conferences, etc. may pass on impressions and experiences.

Some of our lunches will be programmed/scheduled some time ahead – others are arranged ad hoc.

WELCOME!

Tuesday, November 13, 1130-1215

Dr. Kalpana Hiralal from University of KwaZulu-Natal gives a lecture on (45 min):

The Informal Economy in South Africa: A Case Study of Home-based Workers in Kwazulu/Natal

The lecture will focus on home-based workers in South Africa, and ways in which it sustains the livelihoods of many households. Home-based work is on the increase globally, it is a vital and growing part of economic modernization. In many developing countries, this type of work is a response to poverty and unemployment. In South Africa, informal work is an important source of livelihood for many, particularly women.  However, they are not a homogenous group as the nature of work undertaken differs. Informal work consists either of street trading, own account work, or engaging in work either from home or from a different premises. This lecture is primarily concerned with women engaged in home-based work in Kwazulu/Natal. The lecture will discuss the nature of their work, their socio/economic profile, and the challenges they encounter.

 Fredag 16. november 11.30-1230

What is "baby fever"? Longing for children as a generational and gendered emotion by Anna Rotkirch.

Anna Rotkirch is a docent in women's studies and social policy (University of Helsinki, Finland) and Director of Family research at the Finnish Family Federation.

The talk is based on texts by Finnish women about their experiences of "baby fever", a lay expression referring to strong longing for children. I present three types of "baby fever" experiences and discuss contrasting scientific explanations for this emotion from the fields of anthropology, feminist constructionism, evolutionary psychology and behavioral genetics.

Ingeborg Solvang, KVINNFORSK shows the documentary ”The frozen melting pot” (24 min).

This documentary is about foreigners working in the northern Norwegian fish industry. In a region where there has been plenty of fish, but few people - we have been dependent on foreign labour. The film shows the plurality in the foreigner's stories: What are their experiences? What do they see - coming from far away? What are their dreams and hopes? In a contemporary and historical perspective some persons are given the opportunity to share their thoughts about society, nature and culture.

The film has English subtitles.
