FIL-2004: Hermeneutics

Work Load
10  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
This is a free choice subject within bachelor degree studies in Philosophy. It serves as a subsidiary subject in humanities, science and social science fields.

Contents
The teaching is mostly based on texts from Gadamer and Ric?ur to the Italian hermeneutics philosopher Gianni Vattimo. Ric?ur and Gadamer see the primary purpose of hermeneutics as a criticism of inhuman technology and amoral thought patterns, based on the traditional humanities values and ideals. This is too simple, according to Vattimo. Hermeneutics is built in the last instance on ''weak thinking'' (il pensiero debole), which is not only critical of the modern use of technology but also of traditional humanism. It is also critical of the new forms of culture, media and communications in our crisis-ridden, globalized world.
