FIL-2006: Ecophilosophy B: Man and Nature

Work Load
10  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
This is a free choice subject within bachelor degree studies in Philosophy and serves as a subsidiary subject in many humanities, science and social science fileds.
Contents
This question is a central issue: what do we understand by nature? An understanding of and possible answer to this question assumes that different philosophical and scientific theories of nature will be examined in detail, as well as different practical methods of approach. Knowledge of the history of nature expressions and knowledge of practical social conventions relating to nature will therefore be emphasized. Issues of this kind are linked with questions of what type of nature we actually want and by what means we will live with, in and of it. Ethical issues linked to our understanding of, association with and existence in nature are central issues here. Aesthetic issues will also be raised. We shall also investigate possibilities of rearranging our modern way of life in the direction of more sustainable means of living. This entails turning the spotlight on the strong powers of influence to which we are exposed today.
