Contents The course is based on knowledge of physics corresponding to FYS-1002 Electromagnetism. The course treats traditional optics, waveguides and laser physics. Within these fields the following subjects will be taught: Geometric optics, Gaussian beams, electromagnetic waves, integrated optics, optical fibres, optical amplification, laser theory and some laser systems, with emphasis on the semiconductor laser. The students obtain practical experience through laboratory exercises. These must be approved before the exam.

Exam and assessment A final written examination (counting 100%). Grading scale: A-F. Re-sit examination: Early in tutor free term, with reserve of postponed examination, written examination with 4 hours duration which counts 100%. Postponed examination: According to the current regulation of exams § 21. New examination: Early in tutor free term, with reserve of postponed examination, written examination with 4 hours duration which counts 100%.

Date(s) of written examination 15.12.2006 The exam date is preliminary and may be subject to change. Definitive exam date will be announced on the notice boards at the faculties in the beginning of May for the spring semester and in the beginning of November for the autumn semester.
