Dear Colleagues,
Let me remind you of the imminent closing of the Max-Planck-Institut für Geschichte in Göttingen. Apart from its most valuable contribution to making history the result of an internationan cooperation of historians, this institution has been more specifically
the centre of microhistory in Germany, where Peter Kriedte, Alf Lüdtke, Hans Medick and Jürgen Schlumbohm has been working, and where many other
historians interested in the theory and praxis of microhistory have been welcome from all parts of the world.
This is not only a moment to remember fondly the hospitality of the Max-Planck-Institut für Geschichte, and to express an indignation over the administrative decision that condemned an important academic institution to death, but also to welcome, as maybe the last fruit of this tree, the long-expected work of Peter Kriedte. "Taufgesinnte und großes Kapital. Die niederrheinsich-bergischen Mennoniten und der
Aufstieg des Krefelder Seidengewerbes (Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts-1815)" has just been published in Göttingen by Vandenhoeck und Ruprecht.
I attach a personal commemoration of Hans Medick about the Institute both in German and in English translation.
