29th American Indian Workshop Indigeneity and “Indianness” in the World: Old Stories, New Dialogues
University of Tromsø
Tromsø, Norway
14-16 May 2008

Since the 1960s,the hundreds of works of imaginative and historical writing published by Native peoples in North America have attested to the multiplicity of native experiences in relation to issues including (but not limited to) the loss and reclamation of land, the revitalization of language and culture, and the preservation of traditional systems of knowledge. This range of experience has demonstrated the need for more comparative studies, both between various Indian nations, and between native peoples of North America and indigenous peoples in other parts of the world. In some cases, historical and imaginative representations of “Indianness” have emphasized the political significance of the borders between nation states. In other contexts (such as literary representation, relationship to particular geographies, and language), borders between nation states have been revealed as arbitrary.

In this workshop we especially welcome contributions in any field that focus on comparative analyses between indigenous peoples of North America, and the indigenous peoples of the North. Papers addressing Sami and/or Inuit perspectives are especially welcomed.

The workshop will will be held in Tromsø from May 14-16, after the EAAS conference in Oslo.

Please send abstracts of up to 200 words to Laura Castor laura.castor@hum.uit.no

Tips on booking hotel rooms and flights:

For information about hotels in Tromsø: Trip Advisor

You might also go to Norwegian Air’s homepage for what are usually the least expensive domestic flights. The flying time from Oslo to Tromsø is about 1 hr 45 mins. The information in this site is in Norwegian (language).

I have reserved both single and double rooms in several hotels in Tromsø for three nights, 13-16 mai 08.

At the Rica Ishavshotel (kr. 1295) we have 20 doubles (high end but reasonable for two people). When you register, please indicate that you are with the AIW conference.

At the Thon we have 20 singles (kr.745). If you book at Thon, you´ll need reference number: 2515890

At AMI 4 doubles (at kr.621) and 2 singles (at kr.486). This is a budget hotel. Our reference number is 2240.

If you experience technical problems in using the reference numbers, please contact the hotel. For any further problems, contact Laura Castor.

Participants are responsible for your own bookings and payments.

The most economical rooms in Tromso center are at the Thon Hotel. Friends have told me that the rooms are adequate, not luxurious by any means, but that the breakfasts are terrific. The hotel, and all of the others is also very close to the #20 bus that goes directly to the university (in about ten minutes).

Most of the hotels listed are downtown, close to the #20 bus to the university (exceptions are Scandic, Sydspissen, and Sommeroy kurs og feriesenter).

The university has arrangements with Thon, Rica, and Choice Hotels for invited guests; so any of these would be fine (both conveniently located and clean).

Even if you don’t speak Norwegian, you might look at the tourist information website. The visuals will give you an idea about the city and region.
