One-year Programme in Nordic

The Faculty of Humanities offers a one-year programme in Nordic language and literature. The programme corresponds to the former "grunnfag" course and commences in both the autumn and the spring.

Prerequisite qualifications
The teaching in Nordic Studies presumes an existing knowledge corresponding to the third-year level of a norwegian sixth-form college or equivalent competence.

Language of instruction and exam language
Norwegian

Study aims
The aim of this programme is to offer an introduction to Norwegian (and, to a certain extent, Nordic) language and literature, both past and present. The linguistic and literary cultures will, where appropriate, be viewed in the context of their relation to history and society. Emphasis will be placed on content and issues relating to northern Norway. The study programme aims to develop the students´ ability to express themselves in correct, free and natural Norwegian in both official language forms, and to judge the way in which others use the language.

Target group
The programme is intended for students who wish to upgrade their knowledge of Norwegian, or who wish to use the one-year programme as part of a bachelor degree programme, or as part of the five-year teacher training programme in language and social studies. The programme is also suitable for teachers wishing to undertake further education in Norwegian. The one-year programme provides teaching competence in Norwegian in Norwegian schools (secondary schools and sixth-form colleges). Upon completion of the years study it is possible to build upon this by means of more detailed study for one semester, worth 30 study points (taking subjects at 2000 level).

Academic content/organization
The one-year programme consists of 6 individual subjects with a total value corresponding to 60 study points. The programme commences in both the autumn and spring semesters, and continues for two semesters:

Autumn semester:

  • NOR-1012 Language and society. Spoken language variation and written language regulation (10 study points)
  • NOR-1111 Nordic literature from 1880 to the Second World War (10 study points)

(These details are subject to alteration.) Further information concerning each subject may be found in the alphabetical overview of subjects offered by the University of Tromsø:
