One-year Programme in Library Studies (60 ECTS)
The Faculty of Humanities offers a one-year programme in library studies starting in the autumn of 2004.
Description The one-year programme in library studies is a part of the librarian training programme at the University of Tromsø. The programme is only offered at 1000 level and is equivalent to what was previously referred to as a grunnfag. If students wish to continue their study of problems in library science, this can be done within the framework of documentation studies. The library studies programme is a project- and problem-based course. In addition, ICT is used as a pedagogical tool in connection with teaching, conferencing, and paper writing. Students who are admitted to library studies are therefore expected to participate actively in project groups and to use ICT resources during their studies. In the second semester, a comprehensive exam project and a nine-week work placement period are the central elements.
Objectives The main objective of the programme is to provide an education for work in all types of library (public libraries, research libraries, company libraries, school libraries and documentation centres).
Target group The programme is aimed at students who wish to complete further education for the library sector (e.g. public, school, scientific or research libraries). Together with dok-1010/1011/1012/1016 in the Bachelor's degree in documentation studies, the programme provides the formal competence for work as a trained library manager in Norwegian public libraries. The one-year programme can also be used as part of a Bachelor programme.
Admission requirements University admission certification or prior learning and work experience.
Organization of the course The programme consists of 4 separate courses with a total volume of 60 ECTS. Students will attend the ordinary teaching in the subject. The programme can be started in the autumn semester, and lasts for two semesters:
Autumn semester:
- Bib-2010: Document organization and forms of dissemination
- Bib-2011: Document history and media assessment
- Bib-2012: Document institution and policy
Spring semester:
- Bib-2013: Library practice
