Bachelor programme in language and literature. 3 years - 180 ECTS. Curriculum

I. Programme description

Discipline(s)

II. Progression in the programme

Degree awarded: Bachelor of culture and social sciences

Language of instruction: depends on the discipline/language/level. See relevant course descriptions.

I. Programme description

1. Description of the programme
The programme consists of studies of language and/or literature, and gives the students the opportunity to either concentrate on pure language or literature studies, or to combine language and literature in one programme.

Since there is a close connection between any given language and its literature, studying language and literature together can be advantageous, but it is also possible to study either linguistic or literary theory closer for those who wish to do so.

2. Aims/learning outcomes
The objective of the programme is to provide the students with a combined competence in both language and literature or specialised competence in one of the areas, including practical skills in textual work and interpretation as well as theoretical knowledge, and in addition, to strengthen the students' ability to work independently, as well as their skills in written and oral presentation.

The programme opens for a range of possibilities for individual choice, and it is possible to acquire competence in the literatures and languages of many different language areas: English, Finnish, French, Greek, Latin, Nordic, Russian, Sami, and German as well as general literary science and general linguistics. A bachelor's degree in language and literature combined with a one-year course in practical pedagogy (PPU) provides teaching competence at adjunct level, as long as one of the subjects studied is a subject taught in school.

The programme is relevant for students who wish to become teachers, as well as for those interested in working with literature and culture presentation, publishing, media, public administration, translation, interpretation, as language and text consultants, and for information work, in libraries, tourism, marketing, etc.

The programme qualifies for admission to the Master programmes in linguistics and in literature, see pt. I, 10.

3. Target group
The programme is aimed at students interested in literature and culture in general, in aesthetics and rhetoric expression, in language and language use, and in philology.

4. Responsible unit
The Programme Board

5. Subject fields involved
General literature, English, Finnish, French, Greek, Latin, linguistics,  Nordic, Russian, Sami, and German

6. Required previous qualifications/courses
University admission certification. For English, French, Sami, and German, competence at the level of upper secondary school or equivalent is required. See the individual disciplines for details.

7. Study abroad
Part of the programme can be taken abroad, see pt.  II below.

8. The composition of the programme
The programme consists of the following components, where the course group requirement of 90 ECTS constitutes the compulsory part of the programme:

  • 30 ECTS first-semester course
  • 90 ECTS course group (normally a 60-ECTS group + 30 ECTS of intermediate courses)
  • 60 ECTS optional courses

The first-semester course
It is recommended that the students take EXF-0720 Examen facultatum for the humanities.

60 ECTS of optional courses
There are no restrictions on the choice of courses, but for students who wish to become teachers, we strongly recommend that the subject of the 90-ECTS group is combined with a 60-ECTS group in a second subject. This subject can be selected from the other subjects in the programme that are taught in schools, or from subjects taught in schools in other programmes at the university. Optional courses should not be above 2000-level.

9. Discipline(s)

10. Which Master programme(s) does the programme qualify for?
The programme qualifies for admission to master studies, but the faculty does not at this time offer master programmes in Greek or Latin. These programmes are offered in Oslo and Bergen. The other disciplines qualify for admission to the Master programme in literature and the Master programme in linguistics.

11. Forms of work and of examination
The choice of work and evaluation forms depends on the nature and the content of each individual course.

Performance in this programme is assessed with the grades A-F or with pass/fail.

Resit examinations:

  1. Resit examinations will be held as soon as possible after the ordinary exam and normally no later than September 15 for courses offered in the spring semester and February 15 for courses offered in the autumn semester. It is only possible to take the resit examination once, no later than at the beginning of the following semester.
  2. At resit examinations, the candidate is to retake the exam(s) which he/she did not pass at the ordinary examination.
  3. If the examination consists of several exams (portfolio), all the exams are to be evaluated at the resit examination.
  4. Assignment(s), i.e. home assignment(s) on individually selected topics, which were assessed as fail at the ordinary examination can be resubmitted as a revised version.

12.  Student evaluation
The students are given the opportunity to evaluate the teaching in all courses twice:

  • Approximately halfway through the course, in the form of a dialogue between the teacher(s) and the students, or as written feedback to the teacher(s) and/or the Student Advisor for the discipline of which the course is a part.
  • At the end of the course students are requested to complete a manual or electronic evaluation form that guarantees full anonymity.

II.  Progression in the programme
In order for the students to have a good academic basis for the intermediate courses, it is recommended that these are taken when the student is well into the programme, e.g. in the 6th semester.

The programme has 60 ECTS of optional courses. There are no restrictions on the choice of optional courses; they can be picked also from the programmes of other faculties.

For students who wish to become teachers, it is strongly recommended that they take a 60-ECTS group in a second school subject.

Recommended progression:

Compulsory courses 90-ECTS in a language and/or  a subject of literature 60 ECTS group
30 ECTS 2000-level courses in the discipline/optional course1
Optional courses   60 ECTS2

1 The disciplines Greek and Latin have a different distribution of 1000- and 2000-level courses than the other disciplines.

2 For students in the discipline Sami who do not have prior knowledge of North Sami equivalent to Sami as a first language from upper secondary school, it is strongly recommended that they take a 20-ECTS advanced course in Sami before beginning their studies at 1000-level. These students will then have 40 ECTS of optional courses in the programme.

Course descriptions
For an overview of the courses for all disciplines, see http://uit.no/studies/courses/1 or for this semester: http://uit.no/humfak/3514/.

Interdisciplinary courses
Note that for some disciplines, interdisciplinary courses are offered. These are signified with HIF-codes. See each discipline for more information.

Studies abroad
The different disciplines have different opportunities for studies abroad as part of the programme. Contact the faculty, or see the faculty's web pages for further information. It is also possible to travel with an exchange programme as part of the programme, 1-2 semesters.

The advantages of participating in an exchange programme are, among others:

  • Help from teachers at the faculty when it comes to picking courses that will be approved as part of the programme in Norway, in order to avoid wasting time during the programme
  • Help when it comes to admission and housing
  • Studying through the Erasmus- and Nordplus programmes gives students extra stipend funding in addition to the funding from the State Educational Loan Fund.

I. Description of the discipline

Structure
Depending on the students' previous knowledge of Sami, there are two options in the discipline, consisting of 90 and 110 ECTS, respectively. The options consist of the following components:

90 ECTS:

  • 60 ECTS SAM-1000 courses
  • 30 ECTS SAM-2000 courses

110 ECTS:

  • 20 ECTS further education in Sami (SAM-0100)
  • 60 ECTS SAM-1000 courses
  • 30 ECTS SAM-2000 courses

All 1000 and 2000-level courses are compulsory and are distributed over the spring and autumn semesters as shown in the table below (pt. II). Changes in the composition of courses can occur.

Note that Sami studies at 1000-level begin in the autumn semester, while the faculty's other studies at 1000-level begin in the spring semester.

For students who need to improve their knowledge of Sami before starting the 1000-level courses, it is recommended that they take SAM-0100 in the spring semester. The programme is organised as the study of a native language. See "Recommended previous qualifications". The Sami programme normally starts every 4 semesters; for the first time in the spring of 2004, then in the spring of 2006 etc.

60-ECTS group
See semesters 2 and 3 the table below (pt. II) for the distribution between language and literature/culture courses.

Recommended previous qualifications

Students with knowledge equivalent to Sami as a first language from upper secondary school may start the 1000-level courses in Sami. For other students, it is strongly recommended to take SAM-0100 Further education in Sami.
