Qualification awarded: Bachelor of Arts
Language of instruction: Norwegian

I. Programme description
1. Contents
Documentation science includes theoretical and practical study of media such as sound, writing and images, analogue and digital media; documents such as speeches, concerts, books, film, home pages and paintings; and institutions such as libraries, archives, museums, cultural centres, schools, mass media, the internet, etc.

Documentation science studies how human beings use various media for communication, thereby creating documents. The programme also examines how documents are used and organised, for instance in document institutions.

Documentation science is a discipline that reaches across the traditions of the technological and natural sciences, the humanities and the social sciences. We can thus compare the relationship between technological, social and cultural aspects of communicative documentation processes. This interdisciplinary approach also enables students to combine theory and practice in project work that has theoretical as well as practical/experimental elements.

2. Objectives, access to further studies and professional prospects
The programme aims to provide students with thorough theoretical and practical competence in documentation science. A further objective is to qualify candidates for posts in document institutions such as libraries, archives, museums, the mass media, publishing and information consultancy in the private and public sectors.

3. Prospective students
The programme is suitable for students desiring to work with various media and/or in libraries, archives, museums, information consultancy or the mass media.

11. Teaching and evaluation methods, assessment, examination
Students carry out project work at all levels of the programme. Projects include theoretical analyses as well as practical experimentation. All teaching is related to the projects, and seminars and lectures are considered support for the project work.

Readings are not determined in advance, but are decided at the end of a topic/project based on recommended readings and other materials that have been used.

Evaluation consists of portfolio assessment, project submissions and an oral exam. The oral exam is a student presentation followed by a discussion.

Portfolios graded pass/fail, while project work and oral exams are given letter grades A-F.
