NOR-0100: Norwegian for international students

Work Load
30  credits (ECTS)
Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the students with:
o increased practical skills in oral and written Norwegian
o theoretical knowledge of Norwegian language, literature, and culture which will enable them to pursue further studies in Norwegian at the university.
Contents
The course consists of the disciplines Norwegian literature, Norwegian grammar, Norwegian language history and dialect studies, cultural studies, and practical Norwegian.

In literature, an overview of Norwegian literary history from 1800 to the present will be given, as well as an introduction genre theory and training in literary analysis in connection with the discussion of the fictional texts on the syllabus.

In grammar, main aspects of Norwegian morphology, word formation and syntax are studied. Semantic and language functional aspects can also be discussed. In syntax we will work with function analysis (traditional analysis) and sentence part position analysis (field analysis). The object of study is primarily bokmål, but the course will also provide some insights into nynorsk.

In language history, the course will provide knowledge of the Norwegian language situation at the present, and of its most important historical conditions. An introduction is given to the language history of Norwegian with its main focus on the development after 1814.

In dialect studies, an overview of Norwegian dialects and their most important characteristics is given. In this connection, some dialect samples will be discussed.

In culture studies, different topics in Norwegian culture, history, and society are presented and discussed.

Practical Norwegian consists of written and oral exercises. In the oral part, the expansion of the vocabulary, the use of idioms/fixed words and expressions, and correctness in grammar and pronunciation are emphasised. Different forms of work are used, e.g.:
o pronunciation training and listening exercises, partly in the language laboratory
o dictation
o listening exercises
o reports
o role playing
o dialogues and discussions about texts and topics that are partly to be prepared at home.
o interviews
o student presentations etc.
I the written part, written skills are emphasised when it comes to text organisation, text binding, grammatical correctness, choice of words, as well as modes of expression. The work will mostly be in the form of written exercises/assignments in different factual prose genres. The assignments will be corrected and given feedback.

This course requires a university admission certification.

The course is intended for foreign students with a command of Norwegian equivalent to the level 3-exam with the grade E or better.
