Bachelor's degree in Computer Secutity
Program Description
The 3-year bachelors program in computer security gives a basic education in the central areas of computer science and mathematics, with computer security as the main focus. This type of competence is in increasing demand. The program covers both the theoretical basis of and the experimental methods in computer science, as well as the mathematical tools necessary to achieve the expected level of competence by the end of the degree. The program is unique in that it is multi-disciplinary with respect to mathematics and computer science and builds upon a thorough knowledge of both number theory and information technology.
The mathematical courses in this degree program deal with the mathematical basis of cryptography algorithms, electronic signatures, authentication etc. In the computer science part of the program there is particular focus on security in distributed systems and emphasis is also placed on an experimental approach to the subject.
The Bachelor’s program in computer security leads to the Bachelor of Science degree. It is recommended that the candidate further their education by means of a 2-year master’s degree in computer science or mathematics, specialising in computer security.

Contents
Every computer science course in the program covers both theoretical and experimental approaches to the field. After the basic courses in programming, algorithms and an insight into how computers function the program offers courses in certain central areas of information science, amongst others; operating systems, network communications and information security.
Within the mathematical part of the program a thorough education is provided in the mathematical tools that form the basis of all solutions to this type of security problem, whether the issue is cryptography, signature authentication or other security challenges.
The first 5 semesters are common for all the students. In the last semester the student must choose whether they intend to specialise in computer science or mathematics. What the student chooses may often be related to which master’s degree they might wish to take.
In the 6th semester the students must carry out a bachelor’s project in groups with the focus on computer security. Projects representing 10 or 20 course credits can be chosen; (INF-2991)/(MAT-2301) or (INF-2992)/(MAT-2302).
The academic major
The academic major on the bachelor’s program is defined by the following courses (80 or 90 course credits depending on the scale of the bachelor’s project:
Bachelor’s dissertation, 10 or 20 sp
INF-2300 Computer networks, 10 sp
INF-2310 Security in distributed systems, 10 sp
INF-2201 Operating systems fundamentals, 20 sp
MAT-1300 Discrete mathematics 2, 10 sp
MAT-1301 Intorduction to computer security, 10 sp
STA-1001 Probability and statistics 1, 10 sp
Electives
The program also includes 20 – 30 course credits of electives, dependent upon which academic direction the student is pursuing. The following elective subjects are recommended for the bachelor’s program in computer security. Other elective subjects may also be approved upon.
INF-2200 Computer architecture and organization
INF-2500 Computer graphics
INF-2800 Computer science writing
INF-2900 Software engineering
MAT-1002 Calculus 2
MAT-2100 Complex analysis
MAT-2201 Numerical methods
STA-1002 Probability and statistics 2 FYS-2004 Electronics
FYS-2014 Digital design
Teaching/exam
The bachelor’s program offers a multifaceted educational structure. In the lectures the theoretical background and various academic themes are explored. The students undertake active group work by means of solving exercises and through discussion of ways of approaching/tackling the teaching material. An important part of all the courses is a substantial laboratory assignment in programming. Laboratory supervision is available on all courses.
Any obligatory assignments must be approved before the student will be permitted to take the examination. The examinations are of different types dependent upon the course concerned covering written examinations, home examinations, submission of projects, a scientific presentation or an oral exam. Often in fact a combination of these different types.
For further information on evaluation/examination/assesment, see individual course descriptions.
Qualification awarded
The program qualifies for the Bachelor of Science degree.
