Objectives and content
A master's degree program in applied mathematics is an education where mathematics is combined with programming, computing and visualizations. Interpretations and evaluations of results and their relevance is also included. Candidates with this education is in great demand. The research group in applied mathematics is offering master thesis in the fields of plasma physics, optics, mathematical ecology and bioinformatics.

If you’re interested, get in touch with professor Einar Mjølhus, professor Tor Flå or associate professor Per Jakobsen.

The table above is an example of a program in applied mathematics with focus on theoretical physics. This example demands a bachelor degree in mathematics which include basics courses in physics.

Other relevant courses:
MAT-3211 Bioinformatics and courses in mathematics at 2000- or 3000-level.
Special syllabus upon approval.

For further information on evaluation/examination/assesment, see individual course descriptions.

Student exchange
The Master's program is structured such that the student can spend shorther or longer periods studying abroad.

Qualification awarded
The master's degree program in mathematics qualifies for the Master of Science degree.

Access to further studies
The Master of Science degree is a prerequisite for admission to PhD-studies.

Professional prospects
A mathematically based education is particularly robust in the context of rapid technological changes. Graduates are highly sought for, and can work in for example, research institutions, consultancies, insurance companies, banks, oil companies, industry, educational institutions as well as in high technology and software development.

Program coordinator
The program coordinator for the master's degree program in mathematics is the head of the departmental administration Helge Johansen; helge@mat-stat.uit.no, tlf. 7764 5130.
