Energy Balance and Breast Cancer Aspects

Innhold
A Norwegian–Polish-American study. “ A study focusing on the relationship between energy intake, energy expenditure and body composition and biomarkers for breast cancer (e.g. estrogen, progesterone and mammographic patterns.

Futrex measurementAn understanding regarding how variation in lifestyle expressed by differences in energy intake, energy expenditure and body composition influence development of breast cancer has not yet been adequately researched. Furthermore, there is a lack of knowledge related to the possible biological mechanisms operating which are not well understood. This study is conducted with groups of women in Norway and Poland characterized by differences in levels of energy intake, energy expenditure and body composition.

In total 400 women (200 in Poland and 200 in Norway) aged 25-35 years are invited to participate in this study. Each woman will be followed throughout a whole menstrual cycle.Data Entry Daily saliva samples are collected in which the concentration of estradiol and progesterone are estimated through radioimmunoassay (RIA) in the laboratory of Peter Ellison, Harvard University. Mammaographic pattern is defined by mammogram. Among others, several variables included are energy intake (pre-coded food questionnaire, 7 days), energy expenditure (daily log), body composition (Futrex, skinfold, DexaScan) and anthropometric measurements. Additionally, blood samples are taken in order to study metabolic and hormonal profiles. The study continues for 3 years; it was started in Autumn 2000 and it is planned to end in Spring 2002.

(The background for this collaborative study between Norway, Poland and USA is that differences in incidence of breast cancer worldwide and migration studies strongly indicate that lifestyle factors have a substantial influence on the occurrence of breast cancer. Previously, we have observed that physical activity was associated with a reduced cancer risk (Thune, NEJM 1997). However, the importance of differences in energy intake, energy expenditure and body composition for the development of breast cancer has not yet been adequately investigated.

A total of 400 women (200 in Poland and 200 in Norway) aged 25-35 years participate in this study. Each woman has been followed throughout a whole menstrual cycle. The study is performed in collaboration with The Research Unit at the UNN. Among others, several variables included are energy intake (pre-coded food questionnaire), energy expenditure, body composition (DexaScan, anthropometric measurements). Additionally, blood samples are taken in order to study metabolic, hormonal profiles and other biomarkers, i.e. genetic profiles for breast cancer risk. )
