Nasjonalt senter for strukturbiologi i Tromsø (NORSTRUCT)
and
Department of chemistry, University of Tromsø
offers
Basic course in crystallization of biological macromolecules
The course will be given 20.- 26. september 2006 (5 intensive days)
Timescedule
First attendance: Wednesday 20. Sept, 09.15, B302 Store Aud, Science building.
Contents
The course will be basic and is meant for students with no prior experience in crystallization of biological macromolecules. Some theoretical aspects as well as methods will be discussed, but mainly the course is practical oriented with “hands on” work at the lab.
The course will cover basic theory for crystal formation and growth, crystal theory and methods for crystallization. It will also be discussed how to do preliminary studies in order to increase the probability of crystal growth.
Additionally, the course will cover topics like evaluation and optimization of results, handling techniques for further treatment of crystals (storing, mounting, cryo-protection, etc.) as well as give an insight to how crystal structures are solved, state of the art “high through-put” crystallomics and the international status for this field of science.
The practical part of the course will give an introduction to basic techniques like: vapour diffusion with hanging/sitting drops, screening for the optimal conditions, use of “seeding” techniques, use of kits, as well as the use of robotic equipment for crystallization experiments.
The course comprise two elements and will be organized intensively for 1 week:
- Lectures
10 hours of lectures discussing theory and methods for crystallization of biological macromolecules.
- Praktical lab-work
30 hour ”hands on” laboratory work using various techniques for crystallization.
Maximum number of participant is 12 due to the limitation of space for the practical part of the course.
The course will take place at the Department of chemistry at the Science building.
Lectures and practicals will be available monday 18th of September.
The students must apply their own institutions in order to get the course approved with study points. We recommend that it will be given 3 stp for this course.
The students are very much welcome to bring their own proteins for crystallization experiments, see our
checklist.
NORSTRUCT will arrange accomodation and cover some of the expences for a limited number of participants not hosted in Tromsø.
Registration within 8th of September to Renate Lie Larsen pr. email: renate.larsen@chem.uit.no
