Nasjonalt senter for strukturbiologi i Tromsø (NORSTRUCT)
and
Department of chemistry, University of Oslo
offers
Basic course in crystallization of soluble proteins and membrane proteins
(For students participating in the course: log in for updated course pages and course material)
The course will be given November 8th - 14th 2006 (5 intensive days, 3 study points) Timeschedule
Minisymposium within membrane proteins November 13th.
Course Contents and Schedule
The course will give a brief introduction to protein structure determination by X-ray crystallography and a thorough introduction to protein crystallization, both in theory and in praxis. Practical laboratory excercises will include protein crystallization with commercial and self-made screens, inspection of experiments, seeding, handling and mounting protein crystals and the development of crystallization strategies for other proteins (based e.g. on database searches). A final highlight of the course is a Minisymposium on the crystallization of membrane proteins, with invited international speakers.
Organization of Course
The course comprises lectures (12 hours), discussion groups and laboratory practicals (30 hours) as well as the Minisymposium on membrane protein crystallization.
Target Group
The main target group are PhD or Masters students in Natural Sciences or Medicine, however, lower level students and established researchers might also find this course interesting. No pre-knowledge except for basic lab skills are required.
Registration
Registration is by e-mail to Ute Krengel (see contact info below). Please include a short description of your educational background, possibly contact details to your supervisor and a motivation why this course is interesting for you. This motivation may be taken as criterium for a selection of candidates in case the course is overbooked.
Registration Deadline
Full course: October 9th, 2006 (late applications will be also accepted if the course is not booked out).
Minisymposium only: November 9th.
Maximum Number of Participants: 24
(no limits for minisymposium)
