The Student peace prize 2005 is awarded Asociacion Colombiana de Estudiantes Universitarios (ACEU) for their long-lasting and non-violent struggle for a democratic and just Colombia. The committee places emphasis on the fact that ACEU has significant support from students all over Colombia. The organisation has shown great ability to cooperate with both national and international organizations. An important aspect of ACEU’s daily work is mapping violations on human rights. Just as crucial is training students in human rights.
ACEU, founded in 1998, is the largest student organisation in Colombia and represents the majority of the Colombian students. The students of Colombia risk their own life fighting for their beliefs; several of ACEU’s leading members have been imprisoned, tortured and killed. Nevertheless, ACEU demonstrates that education and democracy go hand in hand.
The Student Peace Prize committee acknowledges that ACEU seeks a political and peaceful solution to the civil war of Colombia. The committee wishes to reward the achievements of the organisation and inspire to further action. By giving this award to the students of Colombia, the Peace Prize committee hopes to draw the world’s attention to the ongoing neglected and forgotten conflict.
