STV-3027: Norwegian Politics in the Barents Region Work Load 20 credits (ECTS) | Objectives This subject is suitable for Master''s students in Political Science and other students seeking a knowledge of Barents co-operation and other areas of co-operation between Norway and northern Russia.
| Contents The course is principally focused empirically. It offers an introduction to the central co-operation arenas between Norway and northern areas of Russia: the Euro-Arctic Barents Region and the bilateral regulations concerning fisheries administration, ecology, nuclear safety and the struggle against infectious diseases. The Svalbard Question is also touched on. Two theoretical approaches are used to structure the discussion: theories concerning the effectiveness of regulations, and discourse analysis. Particular weight is placed on discourses that have contributed in forming Norwegian policies in the northern region since the Cold War. Among the questions raised are the degree of success achieved by the Barents co-operation, what pictures we on the Norwegian side have formed of the Russians and North-West Russia, and how these have influenced Norwegian politics within, for example, fisheries and environmental administration.
