The discipline of history is called "the science of change" or the study of how human beings interact and how societies change. Studying the past gives us the long-term time perspective we need to understand the rapid changes in our own present time as well as the slow, long-term changes that have shaped the diversity of societies that surround us.
History brings forward experiences of past generations, experiences that are fascinating in themselves, but that also increase our understanding of human diversity.
The programme gives a broad chronological introduction to history from the antiquity to today, with emphasis on Norwegian, European and African history.
The programme is a generally educative study which gives qualifications for job positions that demand reflection and ability to critical orientation/management of large amounts of information and written processing of complicated cause and effect connections. A bachelor’s degree in history qualifies for admission in master’s programme in history and different kinds of inter disciplinary master studies where history is included.
