Education is the study of upbringing and education, according to the classical definition. Now it’s common to distinguish 3 main areas of the discipline: upbringing, education and training and transmission of culture and knowledge. All these areas relate and intervene in each other. Throughout the programme the student will get to know different theoretical traditions central to the study.
Educational systems, childhood and youth conditions and socialization, different forms of knowledge and learning environments, education policies and cultural pedagogy are central research areas in pedagogy. Research directed towards Sámi and multicultural relations are given importance in the study of pedagogy at the University of Tromsø.
The programme qualifies for the master’s programme in pedagogy and different kinds of inter disciplinary master’s programmes where pedagogy is included, as for example indigenous studies or peace and conflict transformation studies.
