4. Description of Studies
According to the classic definition, Education (Pedagogy) is the study of education and teaching. In modern times it is usual to distinguish between three main areas in the subject area: education, study and training, and the straightforward transmission of knowledge in general terms. All three of these areas affect and relate to one another. The subject area of Education is characterized by a series of different theoretical traditions of a normative, descriptive and analytical character. The subject area has a long tradition in the fields of philosophy, history of ideas, psychology and sociology. The educational system, the child's adolescent condition and socializing, different forms of knowledge and teaching environment, together with education policy, are central areas of research in Education. In educational studies at the University of Tromsø, research focusing on Sami and multicultural relations occupies a central position.
5. Standards of Competence
This programme of study is a qualification to study for a master's degree programme in Education and different types of interdisciplinary master's programmes of which Education forms a part, such as the master's programmes in Indigenous Studies and Peace Studies.
From a professional point of view, the bachelor programme in Education provides a qualification that is particularly suited to work in the educational system, but also to other types of work in both the public and private sectors. The training is suitable for professions where the work involves teaching, education administration, teaching environment arrangements, advice, executive operations, accounts assignments, etc. The individual student will, to some extent, be able to influence the professional direction of his/her bachelor degree in Education, through a choice of recommended disciplines and subjects for the project dissertation.
6. Academic Organization
Students who wish to take a bachelor degree with a specific focus on Education are recommended to choose the introductory course SVF-1000 in their first semester (see the advisory section on study progression under point 9). Students who take the bachelor degree in Education must have a minimum of 80 credits in Education, in addition to ex.phil and ex.fac. The subjects PED-1001, PED-1002, PED-1003, PED-1004 and PED-1005 are obligatory. In addition, students must have taken an obligatory subject in social sciences method (SVF-1050), a thematic specialized subject (PED-2001), which is planned in consultation with a supervisor, together with a project dissertation (PED-2002). The project dissertation is written in connection with the specialized subject and under the guidance of an appointed supervisor, who also assists the student in the composition of the specialized subject. Students with equivalent training in other academic fields or teaching environments may apply for this to be taken into account.
Students may read for the obligatory basic subjects in Education in a group, or they may read in tandem for both PED-subjects and supporting subjects, such as psychology, sociology, social anthropology, political science or philosophy. The choice of thematic specialized subject pre-supposes that the corresponding obligatory thematic basic subjects are accomplished and must be read for during the final semester, in connection with the writing-up of the project assignment. The recommended course of study shown below (under point 7) is one example among several possible courses of study.
All subjects will, in the main, extend throughout the entire semester, i.e. several subjects will be read for at the same time.
7. Student exchange
A period of study abroad of one semester's duration should, as a rule, be included in the fifth semester.
Discussions are in progress concerning study programmes abroad at the University of Nottingham in England and at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
8. Teaching and Examination Procedures
Working methods will consist of lectures, seminars, student discussion groups and a writing course.
SVF-1000 concludes with an invigilated examination, where it is permitted to use recognized study aids. Each of the subjects PED-1001, PED-1002, PED-1003, PED-1004 and PED-1005 concludes with a home-based examination, in which students write an essay ten pages in length on a given topic. The thematic specialized subject, PED-2001, is evaluated by means of portfolio assessment. The project assignment, PED-2002, is written on a free-choice topic that must be approved by the supervisor. Students will receive academic supervision during the writing process. The project assignment will be twenty pages in length. The academic grade for the project assignment will be allocated after a combined evaluation of the written assignment and the candidate's oral examination.
Subjects from other academic fields (supporting subjects) will take a variety of teaching and examination forms, such as lectures, seminars, student discussion groups and essays, portfolio assignments and invigilated examinations.
The procedure for resit examinations will be discussed separately in the individual course plans.
Examination performance will be assessed by means of an academic grading scale of five pass levels (A-E) and F for fail, or by means of pass/fail.
