Course description:
The course combines two series of themes. The first is an introduction to recent debates concerning the issue of globalization and what shall be referring to as the anthropology of global systems, or global systemic process. The first lectures will introduce the history of the emergence of the term “globalization” in the different disciplines of the social sciences and the humanities. It will then contrast the globalization approach with the analysis of global systems, for which the best introduction is the book Cultural identity and global process (Sage 1994). This introduction will be used to set the stage for a discussion of a number of issues and themes that have characterized the study of the global in the past several years, including the issue of the history of global systems, political power, the transformation of the state, the upsurge of local and transnational identifications, the (re)-emergence of terrorism, the emergence of new global elites and more.
The forum
The forum is a section within the net course that functions like a seminar without the problem of being present at the same time. It allows any participant to take up questions and themes that are made public to the other members of the site who can then discuss and debate the issues at hand.
Program
The first meeting (Tromsø)
Lecturer: Professor Jonathan Friedman
At the first meeting there will be lectures about the difference between globalization and global systemic approaches and the critical relation between the two. There will also be given information about the net site and the participants will get access to the literature and the net forum.
The second meeting (Lund)
Main lecturer Professor Jonathan Friedman.
There will be one or two invited lectures by colleagues at Lund in this section of the course.
Detailed program for the two meetings will be presented later.
