Ph.d.-programmet er satt saman av to viktige dokument:
1) forskrift for graden ph.d. ved Universitetet i Tromsø, og
2) utfyllande regler i ph.d.-program i kultur- og samfunnsfag - inkludert studieplan for kvar av dei ni studieretningane.

PhD programme in Culture and Social Sciences
The programme consists of two documents: (1) Regulations for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at the University of Tromsø and (2) supplementary regulations for the PhD programme in Culture and Social Sciences. Collectively, these form the PhD Programme in Culture and Social Sciences.

The Phd programme aims to culminate in the awarding of a PhD in Culture and Social Sciences within one of the following nine fields of study – each with its own curriculum (with reference to point 1):
