The 4th NorFA Workshop : "Biological Applications of EPR Spectroscopy"
is finally under way!

In our previous NorFA network collaboration three workshops were arranged. The first one was arranged by Anders Lund and co-workers in Linköping (Sept 1992) with emphasis on general applications of EPR spectroscopy. The second workshop (Sept 1993) was arranged in Jyväskylä by Heikki Joela and his co-workers with ENDOR spectroscopy as the main subject. The third workshop (Sept 1994) was arranged in Sandbjerg by Jørgen Byberg and Jens Arne Pedersen and had pulsed EPR spectroscopy as a major theme. At the business meeting in Sandbjerg, it was agreed that if we got funding for a new network, the next workshop should be arranged in Oslo. In the previous Newsletter (1995 #1) you were informed that we indeed got funding for a new Network, effective from Jan. 1996 and for one year at a time, maximum duration three years. So - I have now for some time been thinking about the next workshop.

At the University of Oslo, there are no facilities for housing the workshop participants, which was so convenient in Linköping and Jyväskylä. Also, we have no external property with sufficient capacity within the neighborhood of Oslo, like the situation in Aarhus. Thus, rather than to rent expensive hotel rooms in Oslo, I have found it most practical to reserve one of the less expensive conference places just outside of Oslo. After some negotiations, the decision fell on a place called Granavolden Gjæstgiveri, a little less than one hour drive from the University of Oslo. A brochure describing this place has been sent to all labs in the Network. The workshop will take place the days August 26 to August 28. A preliminary schedule for the workshop is given below, and a registration form is sent to all labs. All participants should arrive at the ESR laboratory at the Physics Department, University of Oslo during Monday August 26. For those arriving early, lunch will be arranged in the lab. There will be a few arrangements at the University for those interested. At 1600, a bus will arrive which will take all of us to the conference center. We will arrive there, and finish checking in just in time for dinner. After dinner the first session will take place. Tuesday Aug. 27 will be fully devoted to the Workshop, whereas on Wednesday Aug. 28, a bus will take us back to the University of Oslo just after breakfast. The main topic of the Workshop is Biological Applications of EPR Spectroscopy, and there will be two invited speakers whose identities are not yet firmly established. To keep costs down, we must limit participation to a total of 35 persons. Also, a limited amount of money for travel reimbursion is available, the upper limit is Nkr 1000,00 per person. So you are encouraged to travel as cheaply as possible! All housing expenses and main meals at Granavolden Gjæstgiveri are covered.

The participants are encouraged to present short platform presentations of current work/activity/projects or to present posters. I will need to have your registrations returned by June 15 , and those who have not given any preference between platform or poster presentations will be given notice by July 10th about what is most convenient from the organizer's side. At the same time, notice will be given to those labs where the number of participants must be reduced to keep the 35-person limit.

We're on the Web!

As many of you already will have noticed, the NorFA Network now has a preliminary homepage on the World Wide Web, with address

http://www.fys.uio.no/biofysikk/eee/norfa.htm

Here you will find links to the Newsletters (electronic versions are posted here), an address list of all participating labs in the Network, and also a news page which (a)periodically is updated. In the address list, hyperlinks to each laboratory's WWW homepage are indicated as well as direct e-mail address links. To those of you for whom I so far have incomplete or wrong information - please send me updated addresses, telephone/fax numbers, e-mail addresses and www homepage url's.

I am also planning to establish a mail list-server to which all interested Nordic-network participants may subscribe. More about this will appear on the WWW News Page and in a forthcoming NewsLetter.

Scientific Exchange

I have still not (with one possible exception) received any plans from Network participants with regard to mutual exchange of faculty or PhD students. Please go ahead and establish your cooperations and inform me about requirements for funding of exchange visits! As soon as possible!!
