LÜNEBURG Lüneburg is situated in the northeastern part of Lower Saxony, some 50 kilometres south of Hamburg, and has about 70,000 residents. The city, rich in tradition, has an over 1,000-year history, which is closely connected with salt, the so-called "white gold" of the Middle Ages.
UNIVERSITY OF LÜNEBURG The University of Lüneburg (UL) was founded in May 1946 as one of eight Teacher Training Colleges in Lower Saxony. Full university status was granted in May 1989. Today, some 10,000 students are enrolled as full-time students. The University is organised in four faculties of Education; Cultural Studies; Environmental Sciences; and Economics and Social Sciences, each consisting of a number of departments or study units. CURIO In medieval times, Lüneburg – surrounded by salterns – was remarkably rich due to the salt trade. Along the Old Salt Route the salt was transported via Lauenburg to Lübeck and from there shipped to all the Baltic coasts. The town and its salt were major factors of power and wealth of the Hanseatic League. The salt mine was closed in 1980, and the a thousand years of salt mining came to an end, but the town gained new relevance from its university, which was founded in 1989.
