University of the Arctic

Bodo University College (Høgskolen i Bodo) is a member institution of the network of northern universities, University of the Arctic. The university was officially launched in 2001 and has today about 100 member institutions spread over Canada, Alaska, Russia, Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

University of the Arctic is organizing activities designed to empower the North by cooperation on exchange of students, faculty mobility, distant teaching, cooperation on research and study programmes. This takes place through different programmes:

  • Student exchange / North2North
  • Faculty mobility / NorthTREX
  • Graduate studies / UArctic Field School and PhD courses
  • Undergraduate studies / Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies
  • Research cooperation / Northern Research Forum
  • Continued learning / Arctic Learning Environment

Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies is a course programme with special relevance for Northern students and those seeking knowledge of northern life and environment. The core of the programme consists of seven courses (42 ECTS), which may be taken online and supplemented with advanced emphasis courses (min. 30 ECTS) by on site delivery at a networking institution. A scholarship programme (North2North) is available.

Bodo University College offers the Bachelor of Circumpolar Studies in which the courses and program are adapted to meet our formal requirements.  Six core courses are offered, each 10 ECTS, and they are given as online teaching. Our three advanced emphasis courses focus on Northern Scandinavian politics, society and history. In addition you have to write a BA assignment of 10 ECTS. While you can choose to study the core courses wherever you are if you have access to a PC and internet, you will have to stay at campus to take the advanced courses. The remaining credits (90) can be composed in the way you like, but we advise the students to take a supplementary major to improve their possibilities for taking a MA degree.  A detailed description of the BCS programme is found under the Department of Social Sciences or under prospectus in English.

The Bachelor of Circumpolar studies programme may also be included in a combined bachelor degree or single courses may be taken as a minor or as electives. Bodo University College will encourage the students to take this opportunity to build competence on circumpolar issues and to make use of the University of the Arctic and its member institutions.
