UNIVERSITY OF JOENSUU

JOENSUU
Joensuu is a city in eastern Finland some 400 km from Helsinki. It was founded in 1848 and is part of the North Karelia region. The population is about 58,000 and Joensuu is a vivid student city with almost 10.000 students. The European Forest Institute, the University and many other institutes and export enterprises give Joensuu an international flavour. The North Karelian way of life combines an abundant, pristine nature with life near the border between east and west, and the open and safe society of Finland. North Karelia provides attractive facilities for living, studying, and working and has good connections with the rest of Finland.

UNIVERSITY OF JOENSUU
The University of Joensuu (UJ) was established in 1969. It has eight faculties, nine non-faculty institutes and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in education, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, economics, forestry, theology, and psychology. The University has campuses in Joensuu and Savonlinna. It has some 8200 students, approximately 600 of whom are international. A five-day Orientation Programme for incoming international students is arranged at the beginning of each semester and will smooth your way into the UJ,  your class and your new Finnish life.

ASSORTED FACTS

TUITION
Finnish institutions of higher education charge no tuition fees from degree students. The membership fee of the Student Union (EUR 93 in 2006-2007) is, however, compulsory and payable each academic year for all students aiming at a Master's degree.

ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation is offered by Joensuun Elli, a Student Housing Company, which has dormitories in different parts of town. Most students live in a shared flat where they share kitchen, bathroom and toilet with 1-2 other students. Exchange students are usually accommodated in a furnished room. A room in a shared flat is about 150-270 euros/month. This includes electricity, heating and water.

KEY DATES
The academic year is based on a two-semester system. Instruction is given mainly from late August to medio December (Autumn Semester) and from January to ultimo May (Spring Semester). Vacation periods are 2,5 weeks for Christmas and about 1 week during Easter. Examinations are arranged throughout the year, usually at the end of a course. There are no fixed examination periods.

VISA
Neither a visa nor a residence permit is needed for Norwegian students.

CURIO
In order to help international students to adapt the UJ has set up the Finnish Friend programme. In Joensuu, there are a number of Finnish individuals and families who would like to meet international students in an informal way, to make friends with a newcomer, to invite a student for a visit every now and then, to share their leisure time activities - in general, to introduce Finnish culture to international students. In return, they would like to learn about your home country and culture. International Student Services will arrange the first meeting.
