STOCKHOLM Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the inner city has a population of 776,000, while the populations of the Stockholm urban area and Metropolitan Stockholm are roughly 1.2 and 1.9 million, respectively. The Stockholm region is home to around 20% of Sweden's total population, and 40.5% of the population is between 20 and 44 years. With its location on 14 islands on the east coast of Sweden at the mouth of Lake Mälaren, the city is widely renowned for its beauty. The notable Old City, or Gamla Stan, is also part of the reason for this – and there are even two UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Stockholm area.
SOFIAHEMMET UNIVERSITY COLLEG Sophiahemmet University College is one of Sweden´s oldest university colleges of nursing. It was established by Her Majesty Queen Sophia in 1884. H.M. Queen Sophia's ambition was that good nursing education would contribute to improvement in the quality of Swedish health care. She was inspired by the training school of nursing that Florence Nightingale had established at St Thomas' Hospital in London. The University College is located in the centre of Stockholm in beautiful park surroundings near Östra Station. It has approx. 300 students in the three-year nursing programme and in addition some 500 students in single courses and contract education. The activities are performed on pleasant premises and the college has a well-equipped library. Courses start twice a year, in January and in August and tuition is in Swedish only. The lecturers also conduct research, specializing in topics such as geriatric nursing, ethics, diabetes and pedagogy.
