Fredrikstad
, the most populous city in Østfold, is situated at the estuary of Norway’s longest river, Glomma. The city was founded in 1567, and the old part of Fredrikstad – Gamlebyen – has been a fortified town since the 17th century.

Fredrikstad has offered higher education since the School of Nursing was founded near Østfold Central Hospital in 1955. Since 1994 ØUC has offered health-related education in remodelled buildings on the site where ships were built as far back as 1870. The Norwegian Theatre Academy  opened studies for actors and scenographers in 1998.

Today Fredrikstad has a population of 70.000 – plus 1.500 students.
