FUGE-logoS Norwegian Arabidopsis Research Center (NARC) is a national technology platform, sponsored by the Norwegian Functional Genomics initiative (FUGE), that will offer Norwegian plant scientists resources and technology in the Arabidopsis thaliana model system. NARC will establish a solid basis for basic plant molecular biology, applied plant research and plant breeding in Norway. The centre partners provide the basic technologies to utilize the powerful tools of functional genomics and thereby to promote the quality of plant science in Norway.
NARC is built on existing competence in Arabidopsis research at NTNU (Prof. Atle Bones), UiO (Prof. Reidunn Aalen) and NLH (Prof. Odd-Arne Rognli), and collaborates with other FUGE resource centres, e.g. The Norwegian Micro Array Consortium, imaging and proteomics facilities and bioinformatics expertise centres. By taking advantage of the tools already available, gene function and interaction of gene products can be studied in great detail.
At University of Oslo - NARC we focus on In situ hybridization for cellular localisation and expression analysis of specific transcripts, and Yeast two-hybrid analysis for protein-protein interactions and identification of binding domains and interacting/associated protein partners.

In Situ Hybridization

In situ hybridization is a useful technique for determining spatial patterns of gene expression. Fresh plant tissue is fixed, embedded in wax and sectioned. We use Roche DIG-labeling system for non-radioactive labeling of RNA probes for detection of the transcripts.

Yeast Two-Hybrid Analysis

With the Yeast Two-hybrid technology we can screen cDNA libraries for novel proteins that interact with a known bait protein or DNA sequence, or confirm interactions between known proteins. We are using Clontechs Matchmaker Two-Hybrid Systems for both library construction and screening.
