He has been working as an Associate Expert for UNESCO in Paris for 2 years. He has also been working as a consultant in the Ministry of Education, and as a researcher in Telenor, in a unit called 'Users of the future'. From 1997 until 2006 he was employed as Head of Research at a research and development centre at the University of Oslo, full financed by the Ministry of Education. In this position he was responsible for initiating and following up largescale projects and activities dealing with new technologies in Norwegian schools. One example is the PILOT-project (Project: Innovation in Learning, Organization and Technology), a four-year project with 120 schools in nine regions of Norway and with a team of 16 researchers, using different methods. Since he started at the Department for Educational Research his main task has been to build up a research group called 'TransAction' with funding from the Faculty of Education. He is at present leader of this group. He is also involved in different committees, nationally and internationally, and has teaching and lecture assignments, in addition to participation in several projects.

Øystein Gilje has a master in Education (2002) from University of Oslo and have worked several years both as a journalist in Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) and in secondary schools, specializing on photo, film and language. Currently he is working with his thesis (Ph D) were he the process of digital editing. By drawing on concepts from social semiotics and socio cultural theory, the interaction between the students in front of the screen is understood as "mediated action" (Wertsch 1991, 1998). The data is gathered in the new subject "medier og kommunikasjon" in upper secondary school in Norway.
Gilje is part of a Scandinavian network with researchers, working with multimodal perspectives and moving images.
He has published several articles as part of the Ph D project and he has also written reports on media education in Norway (morgendagens medieprodusenter, co-author: Ola Erstad and Thomas de Lange), and made an evaluation of a Norwegian (mzoon) and a Nordic site for young filmmakers (dvoted).

Kristin Vasbø has a Master in Education from the University of Oslo (UiO) (2003). In her ongoing PhD project International youth exchange as arenas for learning and identity growth
She examines short-term youth exchange as arenas for both culture encounters and learning, from a youth perspective. European politicians and educationalists promote international youth exchange as an effective tool for fighting racism and xenophobia. The underlying idea is that contact between young people from different cultures will enhance the individuals' ability to discover and explore similarities and differences between cultures and the experience will help combat negative prejudices and stereotypical thinking. In her research Vasbø finds that Youth exchanges are also good places to make available different roles and positions for young people, through opportunities, for example in which youngsters with particular expertise serve as guides for others or take part in the same global youth culture. Such redistribution of authority can serve to foster reorientation of self, as youngsters who struggle in schools achieve success and recognition in the setting of a youth exchange. Shifts in context of identity can afford different opportunities and motivations for learning and participation, and global popular youth culture offers youth indicators of sameness more than addressing difference.

Magnus Bliksrud, Research Fellow, PFI

Bliksrud has a Master in Education (Cand. Ed) from the UniversityofOslo(2002). He has worked at the University College of Agder (2003) lecturing in different courses on learning and teaching, organizational theory and conflict management. He has also worked in a group at the Institute for Educational Research doing different evaluation projects in Osloschools and at the UniversityofOslo (2004-2005). The use of technology in education was an important issue in these projects. In 2006 he started his phd-work at the Institute for Educational Research, the UniversityofOslo. His project, Spaces and places in daily life: Young Norwegians everyday use of local places and internet sites, investigates how ICT is affecting in- and out of school environments with special attention to places on- and offline. See project page

Kenneth Silseth, Research Fellow, PFI

In his research project, Silseth seeks to explore different intersubjective processes in young peoples use of digital technology. The technology does not only give individuals new affordances, but also challenge earlier conceptions of the division 'self/other'. By drawing on concepts like 'multivoicedness', Silseth will study how different voices or identities are played out in young people's use of digital technology in both formal and informal context, and problematize a categorical distinction between these two arenas of experience that young people move between. Digital storytelling and Global Conflicts: Palestine will be used as cases in this project.

Håvard Skaar, Research Fellow, HiO/PFI

The title of Håvard Skaar's PH.D.-project is "New Media Literacy: Children in and out of school" . His study is based on downloading of web pages, observations and interviews with pupils and teachers in a 6th grade primary school class in Oslo. The purpose of the study is to enhance our knowledge of new media impact on the relationship between formal and informal learning in the classroom, between the possibilities offered by new media and the ways they are used in specific learning situations, and between intended and unintended consequences of new media use in the classroom. Thought his research Skaar contribues to our knowledge of the pedagogical and commercial aspects of children's new media use in and out of school. He also provides a theoretical contribution to the multimodal approach to new media literacy.
